Alexander Hülshoff, raised in the Palatinate region of southwestern Germany, has established himself as a distinguished soloist and chamber musician, performing on concert stages worldwide. Renowned for his expressive depth and a rich, powerful, and nuanced sound, his playing captivates audiences and is highly esteemed by musical collaborators. His exceptional artistry is recognized on concert stages around the globe.
As a soloist, he has been a guest of numerous prestigious orchestras, including the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie, Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie, Staatsorchester Rheinische Philharmonie, Brno Philharmonic, Neue Philharmonie Westfalen, Orquesta Sinfonica de Cordoba, Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie, Berliner Symphoniker, Orquesta Ciudad de Granada, Tel Aviv Soloists Ensemble, Israel Soloists Chamber Orchestra, Philharmonie Zuidnederland, George Enescu Philharmonie, Kymi Sinfonietta, Armenian National Philharmonic Orchestra, Istanbul Devlet Senfoni Orkestrasi, Orchestra Sinfonica di Roma, Orquestra Sinfônica do Teatro Nacional Claudio Santoro of Brasília, Brazilian Symphony Orchestra (Rio de Janeiro), Minas Gerais Philharmonic Orchestra, Orquesta Filarmónica de Buenos Aires, Mikkelin Kaupunginorkesteri (Finland), Orquesta Sinfonica de la UANL (Mexico), Sinfonica Abruzzese, Orchestra Sinfonica di Sanremo, and many more.
His concert tours have taken him across Europe, the Near and Far East, as well as Russia, North and South America. Chamber music holds a central place in his performances and recordings, collaborating with esteemed colleagues such as Pinchas Zukerman, Martin Stadfeld, Fazil Say, Hagai Shaham, Vadim Gluzman, the Fine Arts Quartet, and the Orion Quartet. Together, they have performed in renowned venues such as the Berlin Philharmonie, Konzerthaus Berlin, Liederhalle Stuttgart, Laeiszhalle Hamburg, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, De Doelen in Rotterdam, Wigmore Hall in London, Herkulessaal in Munich, and many others.
His extensive discography showcases a wide-ranging repertoire, including works by Brahms, Beethoven, Schubert, Shostakovich, Bloch, Servais, and others, with recordings released by labels such as Novalis, Naxos, Musicaphon, Brillant, VDM Musical Treasures, and Oehms Classics.
Alexander Hülshoff is Founder and Artistic Director of the Kloster Kamp Chamber Music Festival and he served as the Artistic Director of Villa Musica, a Foundation of the Rhineland-Palatinate State, from 2011 to 2024.
In 1997, Alexander Hülshoff was appointed Professor of violoncello at the Folkwang University of the Arts. Since April 2014, he is Artistic Director of the Orchesterzentrum | NRW, an institution uniting the four music academies of North Rhine-Westphalia. Since the 2022/2023 season, he is also Conductor in Residence of the Klassische Philharmonie Bonn, which performs its *WIENER KLASSIK* concert series in twelve cities across Germany.
